Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Blackmagic shooters have been waiting for this day for more than 5-years. At NAB 2013, Blackmagic Design announced their Pocket Cinema Camera, a compact camera with S16 sensor and the ability to capture cinema quality images internally. The camera was a tremendous hit and great follow up to their 2.5K capable Blackmagic Cinema Camera (BMCC). It seems like ever since the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera hit the streets, users were anticipating a 4K version.

Well, that day is finally here. Blackmagic Design announced (not so subtly) the 4K predecessor to the original Pocket Cinema Camera at NAB 2018 with large signage outside the Las Vegas Convention Center. At a press conference on April 9th, Grant Petty and the Blackmagic Design team spilled the beans on the newest camera in their lineup.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4K PriceReview

At first glance, it seems like Blackmagic Design has packed quite a bit into the relatively small body of the 4K Pocket Cinema Camera. Housing a 4/3″ sensor that is slightly larger than that of the original Pocket Cinema Camera, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K will be capable of recording 4K (4096 x 2160) footage at frame rates up to 60fps, and up to 120fps in windowed 1080HD mode. It will feature an active MFT mount, meaning you can use all your favorite lenses you bought for your original Pocket Cinema Camera. Not to mention, the flexibly of the MFT mount means you can mount virtually any lens with the proper adapter, including PL glass. The senor is rumored to be the same one used in the Panasonic GH5S, the IMX294CJK sensor supplied by Sony Semiconductor. Those worried about audio recording will be happy to know the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K will feature a mini XLR input with phantom power, as well as a 3.5mm stereo input. To top it off, the camera can record to any USB-C external drive, eliminating the need for expensive proprietary media. It seems like the only thing missing is SDI out.

Price/Release Date

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K price was announced at $1,295 (USD)… quite the bargain considering the original Pocket Cinema Camera hit the streets at $995 and the Panasonic GH5S is around $2,500. This aggressive price point puts cinematic 4K shooting within reach of the masses. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is set for a release date/ship date in September 2018.
